In 2012 ICANN (the Internet Corporation for Assigned Domains and Numbers) the body responsible for managing and coordinating the Internet’s Domain Name System, began the process to introduce new gTLDs (generic Top Level Domains) in order to increase competition and consumer choice for new domain name extensions online.

This means that from 2013, the choice of domain name extensions that we will be able to offer for registration is likely to include opportunities such as;

New Branded Domains

For the first time ever, we will also see Brands having their own Domain Name extension. Google have applied for a few of their own extensions but naturally we don’t know whether we will be able to offer .google as a domain of choice to the internet community yet, but as details are revealed throughout 2013 on those extensions available to you, we will keep you informed.

More choice and opportunity

Today, there are over 300 domain name extensions available to choose from, but from 2013 we can expect that figure will increase to over 1,000.

The list of what’s been applied for was originally expected to be announced in early May but the date was delayed after issues with application security until 13th June.
