But thanks to increased levels of surveillance by governments, huge volumes of data being collected by companies and more of our day-to-day business being conducted online, privacy is no longer a given and is something we all need to work at. There a few online security basics that will help keep your business date safe&#8230;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Browsing\nthe internet, shopping online or using Internet of Things devices all have the\npotential to put your privacy at risk. What\u2019s more, you can\u2019t rely on\nmanufacturers and service providers to protect your online security. That means\nyou need to take steps to ensure that your own information is safe.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>The life of PII<\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>The key to\nmuch of our lives these days lies in Personally Identifiable Information (PII).\nYour PII can include your name, address and phone number but also items such as\nyour National Insurance number and any account numbers that identify you to\nbanks or other businesses. It can also include your browsing habits and the\ncontents of your emails.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>This data\nis valuable to businesses because it helps them to determine your preferences\nand target advertising. It\u2019s also valuable to hackers and cyber criminals who\ncan use it to try to steal your identity or gain access to your online\naccounts.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Businesses\nthat collect and store your data have a duty to protect it, which is backed by\nlegislation such as GDPR. However, as we all know from following the news,\nsecurity breaches where the PII of large numbers of people is exposed are not\nuncommon.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>This stolen\ninformation is traded on the dark web and it has a long shelf life. [1] Stolen\npasswords are frequently used in \u2018credential stuffing\u2019 attacks because people\nare lazy and use the same password on a number of different websites.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>Protecting yourself<\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>In order to\nkeep yourself safe, you should always use complex passwords with a mix of\ndifferent characters and avoid using the same password across different sites.\nIf you have trouble remembering all of your passwords then use a password\nmanager program. If a website offers multi-factor authentication, via SMS or an\nauthenticator app, then you should definitely use it so that even if your\npassword is compromised, it can\u2019t be used.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Something\nelse you can do to prevent your activity being tracked online is to change your\nbrowsing habits. Make sure that you look for \u2018https\u2019 at the start of web\naddresses or a padlock symbol on the address bar. This indicates that traffic\nto and from the site is encrypted. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Mainstream\nbrowsers such as Chrome have an incognito mode, but this only prevents cookies\nfrom being placed on your PC; it doesn\u2019t stop you being tracked by your ISP. To\nenhance your online security further you can use a secure browser such as Tor\nor use a VPN (Virtual Private Network) service.
