Many small businesses opt to use social media platforms instead of investing in their own website because they feel its the easiest and fastest option. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

The website building process can feel a little like purchasing a property \u2013 lots of work to make it truly your own. In comparison, social media offers free and immediate access to an expansive consumer network, which can be an extremely attractive prospect. Crucially, however, whereas a website is completely customisable, social media platforms don\u2019t offer any design modifications and they are subject to strict third-party controls.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

There are many rewards associated with building a strong social media\n presence. It\u2019s free, easy to use and allows many businesses to deliver \neffective, timely customer service. Social media platforms are also \nhighly visual, support a variety of different media, and foster \nengagement extremely effectively. Investing time into building your \nsocial presence will certainly deliver tangible rewards over the long \nterm, however, it would be a mistake to entirely neglect the importance \nof crafting a strong, standalone website for your business. Social media will always be outside of your control <\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

Social media platforms can change their rules of engagement whenever \nthey like, which can sometimes be detrimental to business owners. As an \nexample, a recent update to Facebook\u2019s algorithm prioritises user-shared\n content, which has resulted in the organic reach of business content \nbeing significantly reduced.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Also, at the more extreme end, there is\nalways the potential for social media platforms to shut down and essentially\ndisappear or change beyond recognition overnight. If that were to happen with\nany of your primary social platforms, all the work you have already invested in\nthem will have been for nothing. If you have your own website, you can set your\nown rules and remain firmly in control of your own success.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Social media could limit your capacity for effective lead generation<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

While it\u2019s true that many social media\nplatforms provide a range of digital marketing integrations and features that\nwill allow you to track how well your content is performing and analyse your\nreach, these features are just a small percentage of the capabilities of a\nwell-designed website. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

Social media platforms do not permit email capture pop-ups, gated \ncontent or landing pages, and as these are among the most effective lead\n generation tools and a core component of decent web design, your \nprospects will be artificially limited if you choose to direct your \nfocus solely towards social media.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Social media lacks credibility<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

Most consumers expect businesses to have an\ninformative standalone website. So, if you want your business to appear\ntrustworthy, established and authoritative, it\u2019s essential to have a website containing\nvaluable information about your brand, who you are and what you do.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

In a time when marketplaces are ultra-competitive, you need to know \nyou are doing everything you can to appeal to valuable customers and \nensure they can easily interact with you or make purchases via a \nreliable website. <\/p>\n\n\n\n
