Do Irish Websites Need to Comply with the European Accessibility Act?

Accessibility, Online Compliance

What is the European Accessibility Act

The digital world is evolving fast, and regulations are keeping pace.

As of 28 June 2025, many businesses serving EU customers must now comply with the European Accessibility Act (EAA). Even if your company is based outside the EU, these rules could still apply if you sell or provide services within Europe.

What Is the EAA and Who Must Comply?

The European Accessibility Act (Directive (EU) 2019/882) is a major step forward in harmonising accessibility requirements across the EU. Its goal is to make sure everyone can access digital services, no matter their ability. Unlike previous legislation limited to public bodies, the EAA expands these rules to a much broader group of private-sector organisations.

If your business has more than 10 employees or turnover above €2 million and serves customers in the EU, the law applies to you.

Services covered include:

  • Websites & e-commerce platforms
  • Online banking and payment systems
  • Transport and travel booking sites
  • Digital TV & telecommunications
  • E-books, apps, and software

The EAA focuses on high-level accessibility standards instead of dictating exact technical methods. That means your content must be perceivable, operable, understandable, and robust for everyone, including people using assistive technologies like screen readers or captions.

The Web Content Accessibility Guidelines (WCAG) 2.1 remains the widely accepted standard for fulfilling these EAA requirements.

What Happens if You’re Not Compliant?

Fines can be steep, with penalties in some countries reaching up to €1 million.

Beyond financial penalties, you risk your products being withdrawn, services suspended, and damage to your brand’s reputation.

Accessibility Is a Business Opportunity

Making your website accessible is more than a compliance task – it’s a business advantage.

  • 66% of businesses have seen up to 50% growth in organic visitors after improving accessibility
  • 82% of customers with disabilities remain loyal to accessible brands
  • Inaccessible websites lose €6.3 billion every year to competitors
